Maternal mortality review committees, or MMRCs, are multidisciplinary groups that convene at the state or local level to comprehensively review deaths that occur during or within 1 year of the end of pregnancy.

Compared to other information systems - National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) and Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (PMSS) - MMRCs are considered the gold standard of surveillance. Here’s why:

  • MMRCs have access to medical and social records, autopsies, and sometimes informant interviews

  • MMRCs have an eye to prevention and the ability to make both clinical and public health recommendations for action
