Maternal mortality review committees, or MMRCs, are multidisciplinary groups that convene at the state or local level to comprehensively review deaths that occur during or within 1 year of the end of pregnancy.
Compared to other information systems - National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) and Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (PMSS) - MMRCs are considered the gold standard of surveillance. Here’s why:
MMRCs have access to medical and social records, autopsies, and sometimes informant interviews
MMRCs have an eye to prevention and the ability to make both clinical and public health recommendations for action
